iPhone 4 VPN to Network shares

I've seen old threads that say an iPhone can't access network shares once a VPN tunnel has been established.  Is this still the case with iPhone 4?

Try an app called NetPortal.  I think there is a lite version.

That's a pretty good app.
Are there any recommendations for VPN?  I'm using the native VPN connection on the iPhone 4.  Are there better VPN apps that have more consistent reliable VPN connection?
