Exchange Database size issue

Hi Experts,

I have a query related exchange 2003 database size.
We have an exchange 2003 server is having more than 250 users.
Database details:-
Priv1.edb - 7 GB
Priv1.stm - 9 GB
Available white space is: 650 MB.

Query: If i exracted the information store and checked the users mailbox size (total mailbox size for all users is not reaching more than 2 GB), Iam in a confusion that why then the physical size of database is showing more than 16 GB and the white space is also very less.

Can anyone guide me for reducing the size of the DB, hence iam facing issues on backup.

Thanks in advance.

The STM file is used for non-MAPI clients so could contain the same data as the EDB.

The store will also include the contents of the dumpster along with any disconnected mailboxes.

See here for reporting the actual size: http://www.petri.co.il/reporting_storage_size_in_exchange.htm

I would be very impressed if you had over 250 users and only had 2GB worth of data in it.
