We currently have two SDLT drives in a Quantum M1500 connected to our Backup Server via SCSI.

We are looking at replacing it with a Neo 400s with 3 LTO-5 drives. Apparently this will work with our current Backup Exec 12.5 software according to Symantec’s Hardware Compatibility List.

We are considering the possibility of connecting directly to our SAN via Fibre Channel

Please excuse my inexperience regarding this but is there anyone out there who could tell me what I will need to consider?

Thanks for any help offered

You can put a tape library on the SAN but generally it's just a waste of money since the backup is still going to go through the LAN from source server to backup server, then through the SAN fabric to the library. What's the benefit of that over directly connected it to the backup server?

You might want two backup servers to share the library, in that case SAN attached is needed but you'll also have to buy backup server license for both media servers plus the SAN shared option that allows them to share the library.
