Exchange 2010 - How to forward mailbox to external email address

I am trying to forward an Exchange 2010 mailbox to an external email address. Where I get hung up is when I go to select the Contact I created in Active Directory.  When I Browse to select the address I want to Forward to teh Select Recipient - Entire Forest window does not show the Contact I created.  I believe there is a step that I'm missing.  It needs to be mail enabled.  Do I need to do something to the Contact other than create it to make it Mail Enabled?
