So last time I set up my apple to recieve mail the dumb thing pulled down all the mail from my hotmail account. The experts exchange community was very helpful in telling me that I was hosed and there was nothing I could do about the situation.
So lets avoid that now and plese tell me what I have to click and where in great detail so that does not happen again and I can have my hot ail on the mac and still keep it on the server...

If it is a POP3 account, it is in the accounts prefs, under advanced. There is check box for whether or not to leave mail on the server.

That is right. If the box is for "Remove Copy for Server" is unchecked, your mail program will download the mail from the server, but leave a copy on the server rather than deleting it.
