Extending Wireless LAN

A friend of mine has his Internet connection and wireless access point at the front of his house.  Unfortunately the signal does not extend well to his back yard where he likes to relax and work on his ipad or laptop.  Could someone recommend a combination of repeater and access point (or other solution) that would allow extending the range of the wireless into the back yard?  Preferably looking for something you have actually implemented.  Thanks!

I have implemented a variety of methods.

Cat-5 cable from the original router to a new WAP
Wireless N router seems to have better range nearly double
Powerline network kit, this extends your network using the AC wiring in your house http://www.linksysbycisco.com/AE/en/products/PLTK300 plug one unit into your router and the other for your laptop.  You cannot use a surge strip because it will block the signal.
