For time being I suggest you to use Yahoo mail to chat because yahoo mail has chat and text plugin enabled on the left hand side of the window.

look at the image below
 yahoo mail -- chat plugin
Uninstall -- restart computer and re-install to check the issue persists

If you have the windows xp CD, copy the explorer.exe file from the CD and replace it in system32 folder and check whether the issue perists.

If that does not work try this

Open Registry editor,--- Run--> regedit.exe--> click file--> click export--> and save the file (for backup)

Now Navigate to the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft\ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Internet Settings \ Zones

There should only be 5 items there, numbered 0 to 4. If you see a different one, especially before zero special character which looks similar to 0 try deleting it.

Even if that does not solve , try the below link

Its not that scary to do a registry editing and also you gonna backup the entire registry so incase anything goes wrong you will have the option to restore it.

Have you checked whether the registry entry with special character before zero is there or not, in the location

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft\ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Internet Settings \ Zones

If there can delete it. before that take the entire backup of registry.

Under Zones, there is L 0 1 2  3 4
and on left side , I got

(Default)               REG_SZ
SecuritySafe        REG_DWORD                0x00000001 (1)
SelfHealCount       REG_DWORD               0x00000001  (1)

thanks

Always take the back up of the entire registry before editing.

Unusual for me using the letter L instead of numbers, there is a 50-50 chance that this registry entry has made by virus or your company's System Administrator.

Go ahead and delete the L zone and check the issue persist (do not restart your laptop)

I Think issue will be solved.

If the issue is not resolved import your registry backup file by opening registry editor -- click file and click import--select the file--click Ok.
