Sharp 1655 Scan to Desktop

Scanning Sharp 1655
I'm trying to get scanning setup on a Sharp 1655 copier. I'd like to scan to Desktop or Email. I am doing this remotely and the computer I'm logged into is connected to copier via USB. I don't have access to the web interface because it is not connected to the network. I can do this but would like to avoid connecting it to the network. What I need is a software program, preferebly free (Open source), that I can install on the computer and have it manage scanning to the Sharp through the USB connection. Initially I installed Microsoft's Document managment/Scanning but it's pretty useless and only saves as a TiFF. I need something will be user friendly, scan multiple documents through the feeder and save them into 1 PDF file. Can anyone help me out or give me some advice/suggestions?? Thanks.

P.S. Computer is running VISTA and I haven't had a lot of Success with Sharp's scanning software.

SoftiScan is quite good - however it is not free (although it has a free trial period)

Scan to PDF is also good, and has quite a few addons for additional functionality, but again, not free.

MetaDMS is most likely your best bet if you want to go with free software:

Hope those help.

Best of luck.
