I downloaded a web part (.wsp) from codeplex.  I go to the edit page on my sharepoint 2010 site and do the upload a web part under the insert web part tools.  After it uploads I can not see it in the list of web parts.  Closed the browser, reopened it and logged back into the site and the web part still is not listed.  Do I need to do anything else to get this imported and viewable?

when you upload web part while editing your page, it never goes in available web parts list but it is available only for that page only. here to show web part in web part list you need to upload that web part in web part gallery.

go to site settings -> web part gallery -> select upload and upload your web part there.

Once uploaded provide name and group as well under which it should be visible. then it will be available to use on any page.

Thanks vikas413.  Have a follow up quesiton.  The file I got from codeplex is wsp.  Looks like in the gallery the files are .webpart and .dwp.  What do I need to do to that .wsp file so I can upload it and use it as a webpart?

to install wsp file you need to use command line tool Called STSADM.exe

use the command line given on codeplex from where you have downloaded the wsp file. you can find stsadm.exe help @ http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc261956(office.12).aspx

hope this will help you.. there must be installation steps given for the wsp on codeplex from where you have downloaded it.
