To stop the updater, go into the "updates" option within one of the Adobe products.  It should bring up the Updater which has a Preferences menu on the first page.  From there you can tell it to not check for updates for any of your Adobe products.

Were you able to find the menu I mentioned or did it not show up?  What didn't work in the process?

For Adobe Acrobat Pro in Preferences, Updater I selected "Do not download or install updates automatically". But the updater keeps appearing every once in a while. Thanks

Do you have any other Adobe programs that could be trying to access the updater?  Adobe Reader, Distiller, Photoshop, etc?

How would I check? The update that I always cancel is for Adobe Acrobat... always.
