Configure SNMP traps on ESX servers

I have configured Windows servers SNMP service with community string and SNMP traps to be sent to HP Insight Manager for hardware /software alerts purposes.
I would like to know how to configure SNMP community string and SNMP traps for ESX servers.
I have been reading about the HP can use WBEM instead of SNMP to achieve the same goal, but I am not sure how to configure it for ESX servers.
Any idea?

Thanks

Solution:

To use HP SIM to manage your VMware ESX servers, you need to install the HP Management Agent for ESX 3.X/4.X in the ESX servers.

Download the HP Management Agents for ESX4.X following the next link:

Download the HP Management Agents for ESX3.X following the next link:

this is possible with vcenter installed. there is a setting for snmp in vcenter settings. if vcenter is installed. using vcenter all snmp traps can be sent for all esx servers.

Now,
RicoCebiche: are you saying that I need to install HP Management agent (iI guess it is called also HP Management Home Page) on the ESX server (Linux)
 or VCenter(windows) ??

parak seafarer: where in Vcenter can you do that? without going with RicoCebiche approach ??

goto "administration -> vcenter server settings -> SNMP". Here you can specify the snmp reciever address along with the port and community string.

vcenter does monitoring and management of multiple esx/esxi servers and vcenter has the capability to send snmp traps to a specified server.

esx does not have this feature which vcenter has. what you can do is monitor this server externally by installing the snmp mib. can refer to the below url for details.

Thanks...
I have seen Vmware Administrators  using vMA (it is a virtual appliance) , they SSH to Vma and configure SNMP for ESX or ESXi, but I haven't seen them doing that from VCenter.

Hi Jskfan,

we are using the vcenter snmp to send traps to our fault management server. We configure the alarms and triggers for sending traps for esxi in vcenter.

vMA is for admins to run scripts directly. its mainly for experts who are well versed with vmware kernel. for a basic user vcenter GUI would be easy to navigate and configure. its up to you to decide which procedure you want to impliment.
