Fix Outlook Contacts by removing or splitting characters

Hello Experts!

I have a user who recently asked for help on importing his contacts from Google Contacts into Outlook. I'm not 100% if the problem originated from Google Contacts or even before it.

The issue is that we find all contacts with middle initials in the last name, and sometimes a dash in the last name. Although this is not a grave issue, it impacts the way contacts are listed. For example:

[First] [Middle] [Last] [Company]
[John] [] [J. Doe] [Acme Inc.]  ---> J. Doe, John Acme Inc (listed by J not D)
[Andy] [ ] [-- Katz] [ ] ---> -- Katz, Andy (listed at begining of contacts)
[ ] [ ] [A. Roberts] [ ] ---> A. Roberts (listed by A and not R)
[Jane] [J.] [Doe] [Acme Inc] ---> Doe, Jane J. Acme Inc (listed correctly as expected)

I'm not familiar with VB for Outlook and figure I need to do some character and string manipulation. I found a script that helped me reset the "File As" setting before I realized the problem was deeper than I thought.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I suggest exporting all contacts to excel, cleaning it up, delete all contacts from outlook, import bak into outlook.
