The issue is complex and depends on your data.
Using profiler, engine tuner to improve performance as well as use perfmon to baseline the server and monitor its load changes/performance impact as the amount of data grows.

arnold, i was thinking of general jobs that can help with any environment, regardless of specifics.profiler/perfmon come in when performance issues arise or you want to manually check on them. but if you need a daily report if there is any specific issues, or an overall picture of the environment?

You can use the SQL reporting service to report on index use, etc. It is better to have a baseline and monitor it as the use grows versus trying to figure out what is going on when the system stops performing.

Not sure whether a similar version exists for sql 2008 or whether this is sufficient.
Not sure about general all encompasing approaches.  I think since sql 2005, the server auto-tuning engine handles some "improvements" not sure what you are after.

Setting up reorganize/rebuild index based on index fragmentation and will limit the growth of the transaction log
