Ways to repair windows explorer shell?

The windows xp shell was acting weird, when I open up a folder in explorer the folders pane would already be expanded and after turning it off and navigating to another directory it would open up again.

also the search pane was not working, it would just be a blue box labeled search companion but nothing would show up...

So i figured the registry was messed up cause all these shell errors, is there a way to reset the shell other than system restore via a cmd line util or something?

For example SFC /scannow repairs the protected windows system files, I tried to run it and got the error "User must be logged on to the network to perform this function"

Same error with the built in local administrator account.

Any suggestions on how to repair something like this other that sys restore/ re image??

This will reset all hives but you may only want to start the reset of the hive local machine only the hive is called system.

But it may be a time waister... I would re-image...
