I have an excel workbook with links to external workbooks. I have set links to update automatically and have verified that all the links are ok but they still dont update until I have opened the other workbook. Anybody know how to fix this?

I might be off the mark but is the external workbook a 2003 version? If yes, then try saving it as 2007 and then retry it.

Though you have mentioned it above but just to reconfirm you have done the following?

1) Office Button, bottom right, -Excel Options
-Trust Center
-Trust center settings
-External content
-security settings for workbook links
"enable automatic updates for all workbook links" is Active

2) The ribbon under the quick access toolbar: Data tab - connections group - edit links - update shows a selection of automatic or manual?

Hmmm. That is strange.

Ok when the external workbook is closed, go to any cell which has a link on your main workbook and press F2 and then press enter. Does it update the workbook?

JonMny: No that article is not applicable to this as you are not using an earlier version.

Does this happen with specific files or happens with all linked files?

yes, not sure if it matters but the cells that it's linked to are also formulas.

If I open any of the linked files first and close excel then open the main workbook the links do update.

No that doesn't matter. Pressing F2 should have updated the formulas anyways. But as per your post ID: 35150237, F2 also doesn't work.

Does this happen with specific files or happens with all linked files? on your pc.
