Are there any ingres DB experts on these forums? And if so is this the best place to ask ingres related questions -- as I couldnt see an ingres sub forum? I have some questions on ingres hardening, patches, operations, priveleges, passwords etc if anyone may be able to help shout if not I'll delete the question

Brill, do you know of any ingres hardening guides out there? Security hardening?

Namely, I wanted to run through the following controls on an ingres database in our environment:

1

ensure all the latest ingres security patches have been applied

ensure the database is being backed up regularly

how you can check password policies for ingres database accounts, and or see which windows domain accounts can access the database(s)

which default table holds database account information, name, status, last login, etc

what file extension will an ingress database and backup file have, so i can check for their location on the file system

where I can check password policies for ingres database accounts, and also the table where the encrypted passwords will be stored

how to run a schema of all tables in an ingres database

how to run a list of all databases on an ingres instance/server

lets start with some basic info:

what version of ingres, on what platform and what is your current knowledge/experience level?

What is SQL Server and how does it work?

The purpose of this paper is to provide you background on SQL Server. It’s your self-study guide for learning fundamentals. It includes both the history of SQL and its technical basics. Concepts and definitions will form the solid foundation of your future DBA expertise.

I'm willing to help where I can but it sounds like you really need someone full-time, a least for a short time

I actually meant ONE question but lets see what I can do with a couple you asked:

ensure the database is being backed up regularly - there are several ways to do a backup, whatever is used take a copy and an empty machine and have a database built from the backup, this is generally a good idea anyway to verify the backups

what file extension will an ingress database and backup file have, so i can check for their location on the file system - an ingres database has no specific file extension, indeed it may be on a raw disk partition and so not visible from the operating system

how to run a schema of all tables in an ingres database - "select * from iitables"
