can't create an exchange mail profile, can't resolve name

I created an Acronis image of windows 7 professional and copied it to 3 computers.
Internet works fine, joining the domain server worked fine but trying to create an exchange outlook profile fails.
I have put the dns info of the exchange server in the hosts file in case it was a dns problem.
I can ping the exchange server using its name.
when I try to create the profile I get a message that " Outlook cannot log on. verify you are connected to the network and are using the proper server and mailbox name. The connection to Microsoft exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action."
I can go to another computer that was not imaged and the connection is there and I can setup a profile for the same user.
The exchange server is running on a 2003 r2 software.
