Windows 2008 R2 not genuine

I just started working with someone that has a Windows Server 2008 R2 Dell server.  It looks like maybe a counterfeit license was installed on it and now they're unable to log into their server.  Can they purchase a new Windows Server 2008 R2 and install over this existing version or do they need to start over from the ground up?

Thanks,

Matt

Thanks for the suggestion but not practical due to time and budget constraints.  I called Microsoft and they ended up pushing through the activation as there was some kind of problem with activation on their server.  Imagine that...

If they can not login to it, that sounds like a different issue than licensing.

You could use a utility to reset local admin password, but why inherit a server you did not configure or manage the software installs or control the security on.  Start from scratch and install so you know everything there is to know about settings and installeId software.

I would get their data off of it using a tool to boot from a CDRom/USB Drive then copy their data off and do a clean install.

The problem was licensing and Microsoft straightened out the problem.  Thank you!
