1.Open Command Prompt by Start -> Run and type "cmd"

2.On the Command Prompt, type "net stop wuauserv". This is done so that you will terminate the windows automatic update service to allow us to delete the cache files

3.Still on the Command Prompt, type "cd /d %windir%" or "cd\windows"

4.Type "rd /s SoftwareDistribution"

5.Thats it, the cache has been purged. Now we need to restart the windows automatic update service again. To do that, type "net start wuauserv"

when you try to install or when you try to download, if that is download then also make sure that windows update services are running properly.

@anantshah:
that is a good find, but SBS is built on Server 2008 X 64 so the better link is:

@oasistechnical:
very often one or more updates just will not install automatically.  I have never been able to find a pattern to this, but if the offending update is downloaded and installed manually future updates then install as advertised.  If you have repeated instances of this, and the listed tool does not fix it, MS will open a no charge case to resolve  it.

With servers we recommend that updates be delivered with WSUS, that they be approved by the administrator after some delay for verifying that they don't break things (you can check various places on the internet), then applied at a time when the server can be restarted immediately.
