Sleep mode fails sometimes

On occasions my laptop switches off whilst in sleep mode. When this happens and I switch it on I get the message that windows failed to shutdown properly and there's a menu of options, "Start windows normally" being one. Other times it's ok. OS is vista.

Any idea what's happening and how to fix?

Go to your control panel and click Power Settings.  Now click on advanced and you can go through each catagory to check your settins.  Often your computer will hibernate or go into sleep or standby based on how long it sat without being used.  

I've also seen this as a problem with computers running Vista way way more than XP or windows 7.  Consider upgrading if that's an option.  

Last you can check your manufacturer's website for software updates related to your computer and it's power functionality.  Sometimes a BIOS or ACPI update will do the trick.

I think it may need some kind of update.. The settings in control panel are fine. It just doesn't always hold the low power state when in sleep and completely switches off, and there's plenty of battery power.
