Hi All,

Is it possible to reduce the Exchange mailbox size with the EV archival ?

at the moment several of my storage group (database partition not the transaction log) is almost full (less than 20%) so I wonder if EV can relief the stress on disk space by archving ?

if yes then how to do it for specific storage group only ?

Thanks

EV can point to an OU/Group/User/Distribution/Security Group.  You can create a group or OU that has all users in the stroage group and point the provisioning group to it.  You will then create a mailbox policy (you should do this first) and place into the provisioning group.  It will then get all the mailboxes in the particular storage group

Hi Paul,

I am now thinking to do the archival process weekly over the weekend

My initial reason not archiving nightly is that the exchange server 2007 full backup itself took around 15 hours to finish (300+ users Mbx over 1 GB vNIC - Virtual machine NIC directly into tape drive), means if I start the backup at 7 PM itwould finish by 10 AM next day, therefore I cannot run the archiving process nightly.

Most probably I'll find a good time during the weekend timeslot between 10 AM - 7 PM.

would that be acceptable ?

Archiving nightly shouldn't be an issue since most are configured not to delete off the mail server until archive bit is reset using the regular backup process.  You can archive as needed but keep in mind that the items will not be deleted until a backup is made.

You can also set a custom schedule for archiving and once the initial ingestion is complete you are only archiving items that are one day old.

paul, "regular backup process" do you mean VSS Exchange full backup using 3rd party tools ?
