bootmgr is missing - manual restore

I've got an HP Pavilion laptop that's getting the bootmgr is missing error during start up.  I tried doing a system recovery with a Windows Vista installation dvd...but it couldn't find any operating system to repair.  If I pull the HD and look via another PC, I can see all the files there.

What other options are there to repair this?  Thanks!

do one thing put your vista dvd and then boot from dvd. then you will see many option but click on command prompt when commmand prompt will open then type these commands

bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd"  this command will rebuild your bootmgr. try this one time and you can see video also

There is no operating system listed in the System Recovery Options window.  It's blank.  And doing the command prompt, it doesn't find any operating system either.  Oh well, whoever messed this computer up, messed it up good.  I'm doing a data backup then system restore instead.

This didn't work for me. BUT, it did help me make the decision to stop trying to repair the bootmgr and simply backup data and reinstall OS.
