Company website URL wont work with our Domain

We have a company website which is hosted by an external 3rd party company. Our marketing dept got sent a URL that links into part of the website, this URL only worked when outside our domain, and didn't work for anyone within the domain and just came back with 404 error message.

The URL they sent went http://ourcomapny.com/.....etc

If I added www into the URL it worked within our domain (EG:  http://www.ourcompany.com/..... etc.)

I'm not sure why this made such a difference, maybe DNS ??? and if anyone could point me in the right direction to be able to prevent this from happening that would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like your internal Windows domain is named the same: ourcompany.com

Just typing http://ourcompany.com will take you to your internal domain controller.

This is why Microsoft suggests that you name your internal Windows domain: ourcompany.local

Ping both ourcompany.com and www.ourcompany.com and see if the IP addresses are different.

If so, then the default DNS 'A' record for the domain needs to be changed.

Yep DNS records need changing. Unfortunately we can't do this for other reasons (so I've told), but thanks for clearing up a head scratching moment for me "kdearing"
