Nero Vision imported avi looks terrible

I have used nero vision in the past and it has been adequate for my needs but I am finding it impossible to create a video file with an avi from a screen capture app.  I have tried an older version of Nero as well as the newest version.  I tried several screen capture apps including CamStudio and BBStudio.   I have tried tons of quality settings to no avail.  When I import the avi into nero the quality in the preview looks fuzzy and terrible and the export is just as bad no matter what I export it to or what I change the settings to.   Any ideas would be appreciated as well as suggestions for alternate software.  Thanks

I use FRAPS for screen captures and have it setup to capture DWM so I can get regular windows activity captured.
