Compatible Phones With Kannel
Hi all,
My trusty old Wavecom modem has just kicked the bucket and i am hunting for a new GSM modem which i can use with kannel to send SMSes.
I checked the list of compatible phones in kannel.org and it was pretty outdated.
I have since tried using GSM Dongles HUAWEI E169 and HUAWEI E1782.
But to no joy.
I am now considering the get mobile phones and using USB cables to connect to PC.
Is it safe to say that any mobile phone w/ USB linux can detect will work with kannel?
Anyone here using kannel with some recent models of mobile phones?
it is kind of hard to get the old mobile phones stated in kannel's site.

Phone MUST accept AT commands and get detected on OS supported by Kannel. That's it. Latest basic phones should work well. Ideally almost all phones should work as the modems are standardized. Problem may occur due to driver/communication problem between OS and Phone (Bluetooth, USB). If phone has serial connection, it will work for SURE!

Hi,
Thanks so much the advice, too bad most phones are using USB now, do you happen to know of any current phones on the market with USB which work with kannel on Redhat RHEL 5 or CentOS 5.5?
I tried using some of those USB dongles, but as mentioned, kannel can't detect or interface with them.
Thanks!.

I had tried it long back and wasn't successful in getting Kannel work with USB. Later I didn't try. You can check following links for discussion. Scattered knowledge and with your experiment, I am sure you will get rolling.
Please post your findings and results for me to learn. Thx!

Hi,
Just an update, i managed to get a USB dongle to work by looking at the guide you sent me.
I can now confirm that HUAWEI USB dongles ( in my case E169 series) are compatible with Kannel.
just as long when you plug in the dongle into the machine and type dmesg you should see linux detecting the dongle or mobile device as a GSM modem.
Then remember to set ownership permissions of the USB device as kannel.
lastly set speed = auto in kannel.conf and kannel will do the rest in detecting the speed to communicate with said USB device.
I hope this helps someone out there.
Thanks!
