Troubleshooting my SharePoint Server 2010/FAST Search Server 2010 implementation I notice that the application pools I named and defined in Central Administration for FAST SSA and Content have GUID like names in IIS, not the user friendly names I gave them when creating them. It that expected?

Yes.  Even SharePoint 2010 on it's own creates names with GUID's for application pools for the service applications.  It's once thing I constantly find frustrating about SharePoint is their obsession with using GUID's
