I'd like to get answer on the question what's benefit of separating application software from the database management system?

Avoding resource bottlenecks (RAM, CPU, Harddrive), SECURITY(disgruntled employees, corporate espionage, protect database behind additional firewall from hackers), business continuity in the event of a disaster, performance.

Network Security is the big one that comes to mind.  If a user can access your application, they may also be able to access your database, possibly corrupting it purposly or accidently.  Theft of information (think credit card numbers, personal information, proprietary information).

Probably other reasons that I haven't quickly thought of as well...

In what sense?  Physical seperation?  Seperating database code from application logic?  If you mean the latter, you may want to investigate the benefits of using the Model-View-Controller (MVC) deisgn pattern.
