Coming to think of it again, it was actually Autocad which contained the OLE object and we would continuously click on it until it opened.

what happens when you right-click on the object. Dont you get an option to open the object?

Looks like there is not much I can do about it.

Why don't you request attention from CS so that more experts are notified to look at your problem?

How to request attention from CS ?

Please post sample.  I have some code, but rather than shooting it out, would rather test with something not working for you.

Can you do this with a non-confidential sample?

yagnesh_123Author Commented:
What you want as sample, since.....
I create a new excel file by opening excel file.
Embed a text file
Double click does not open.

Open Excel/safe mode
Embed a text file
Double click it opens.

Oplading Sample will make no difference.... Since nothing is in it.

Now - that's not quite true.

I just embedded a text file and these operations work for me.

Does the attached work for you when you double click on it?

Problem over here is for one particular user.

It should open in general scenario, i am able to open this file from my PC.
But that particular user cannot.

Understood...

Ok

Try disabling any anti-virus software, then try to open the embedded object.  Several threads in the "cloud" seem to think that could be a related problem - especially when it can open in "safe" mode.

Can`t disable anti virus, its a corporate enviornment

dlmilleCommented:
You might need to - to determine if this is the problem.  If its working fine on other machines and this is the problem then a reinstallation or reimage could be in order.  It might be worth an IT ticket.

You also might be able to temporarly disable - that option COULD be available.  IT have their ways, in the PUSH environment some software won't install/upgrade with anti-virus running so they've figured that out.

Full uninstallation & Reinstallation was already done earlier, before i raise this case.
Yet problem persist.

dlmilleCommented:
of what?  The anti-virus software?  PS - when they uninstall do your test before they reinstall :)

Dave

yagnesh_123Author Commented:
Uninstallation & Reinstallation is done of MS Office Application.

Antivirus Software is as it is.

dlmilleCommented:
Ok - suggest having IT uninstall and reinstall anti-virus.  And in the middle, you can do your test.  Or just have them admin in and take anti-virus offline (e.g., for 15 mins, or whatever) so you can test.

We have corporate policies as well - but if this is a conflict issue it is IT's responsibility to prove it is/is not and repair.

dlmilleCommented:
So, you tested it without antivirus and still the problem, correct?

Dave

yagnesh_123Author Commented:
Yes, uninstalled
Checked
Reinsttaled Antivirus
Problem is as it is

Is there anything i can uncheck in excel or disable, the features that are enabled when i open excel in normal mode.
Since in excel /safe it works

Good question.  Let me investigate now that we have virus "resolved"...

Try this.  On that computer, add an embedded object.  Can you open it?  Save then open the file.  can you open it?

Dave

yagnesh_123Author Commented:
No.

I opened excel, new file--> embed a test  text file.

Double click cannot open.

dlmilleCommented:
Is the test text file wholly embedded, or does it have links pointing anywhere?  That would exclude trust issues, I think, if its wholly embedded, no other links associated.  This is curious.

yagnesh_123Author Commented:
The test text file that is embedded is like

Create from file --> Display as icon

dlmilleCommented:
And you've probably scrubbed through all the security settings/trust settings already, yes?

I sent a note out to other E-E experts to see if they can provide new ideas.

Yags, two quick questions and then we will skip the possibility of AV causing this.?

1) Are you using Norton AV?
2) If yes, then try this. Disable AV, Open fresh instance of Excel and re embed the text file. Does it open?

Sid

yagnesh_123Author Commented:
We are having Mcafee

SiddharthRoutCommented:
Kool then it is not an AV problem.

Next question.

Are you able to open the embedded object in a different pc?

Sid

yagnesh_123Author Commented:
Yes

SiddharthRoutCommented:
Ok next thing, Right click on the embedded file from the pc where it is giving you trouble and post the screen shot of the right click menu that pops up.

Sid

SiddharthRoutCommented:
Also if you could post a second screen shot of the entire Excel window from that pc.

Just another thought...can you create another user on the problem machine to see if the machine has the problem or just the user...and if this is a corporate account, maybe user can log in elsewhere to see if the problem is specific to the user (which I would doubt).

So basically, it would seem to me that the problem is the machine and not the user.  If IT re-built the whole machine, does the problem persist?  If so then it's something that IT is doing (possibly for/to the user).  If not, then it's a configuration for that user and maybe a rebuild is the way to go, although a lot of effort migrating all the pieces to the new machine.
