Java, channel block and non blocking mode

I am reading Java api datagramchannel.java. There is block mode and there is non blocking mode. What does this block mode mean? What does this non-blocking mode mean?

Blocking means that the stream will block when you attempt to read, halting the reading thread if there are no data to read.
Non-blocking is when an event-driven approach is used: a method is called when new data come in
