for Starting out  I Like Apress books
Beginning SQL Server 2008 Administration by Robert Walters, Grant Fritchey and Carmen Taglienti (Paperback - 6 Oct 2009)
Their style is clear and you can get in touch if your have probs

For Moving along   I Prefer Wrox

Beginning Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Administration by Chris Leiter, Dan Wood, Michael Cierkowski and Albert Boettger (Paperback - 23 Apr 2009)

Professional Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Administration (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) by Brian Knight, Ketan Patel, Wayne Snyder and Ross LoForte (Paperback - 31 Oct 2008)
Again  they will help out if you don't understand stuff  and

Then
Samms
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Unleashed by Ray Rankins, Paul T. Bertucci, Chris Gallelli and Alex T. Silverstein (Paperback - 16 Sep 2010)

Clear and informative  but  get ready for a long read

But this is purely a subjective and personal approach by knowing  which publisher suited my style of learning on the job so to speak.

good luck and enjoy
