Calculating distance from the subject

I have never done an image processing, and do not even know the correct Topic Area (Please suggest different ones if you know it)

I my program to open a picture of a subject, and calculate the distance the camera was from that subject.  Is that possible?

not quite possible
there's a chace though: if the subjects are people (that have predetermined sizes) and the pictures does not make use of zoom .... you could approximate

If you know the size of subject, physical size of camera sensor and used focal lenght... it might be possible. But if you have never done anything like that, it might be bit complicated to start with.
