Need recommendation for home NAS solution

I need to a recommendation for a home NAS backup solution. I had been using a 1Tb Maxtor one touch. I just got an external HD with 160 Gb of data on it, and when I went to transfer the data to the Maxtor, I get an error which appears to be a failure to mount the partition. I can transfer some files in and out, then it fails. I have to reset it to try again. Basically unusable.

I will soon have  alarge amount of data, about 500 Gb I need to protect. I was thinking of two separate NAS devices with different IP addresses, but I am open to suggestions. In my office LAN, I use a Buffalo terastation with RAID array, but even that failed once and I lost all the data, fortunately, not critical.

ANyway, today I bought a Seagate GoFLex 2Tb NAS...what a piece of crap! THe software was crippling and it would not maintian a static IP address after it reboots.

ANy suggestions???

Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Drobo. Either nas or direct attached. I have two that I put 5 2tb wd ears drives in (the same drives they sell as a package but much cheaper to buy yourself). No problems yet after about 9 months of always on use.
