2nd Hard Drive Suddenly appears as Unallocated

This strange behavior happened this morning when I switched on my XP PC. Last time everything was fine. I don't remember I did somthing to trigger that behavior.

I had several backups in my 2nd drive while today everything dissapeared. In Computer Management from the Control Panel all the single HD partition appears as unallocated....

Is it any way to restore my contents and the functionality of the HD? Do you need to suggest me any "Partition Restoration" program?

you can try a data recovery program like ontrack data recovery  assuming the hard drive is mechanically in good shape.
hope you get good results.

Get the UBCD http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

Download links are the icons at the top of the page above Overview.  Browse the page and see what utils are there for you.  Check the hard disk utils especially.

Make the CD and boot from it.

Run TestDisk which is on the CD.

Tutorial http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Step_By_Step and see http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/Data_Recovery_Examples

If you use TestDisk take all caution.  As long as you don't save you'll be OK.

See what TestDisk makes of your disk and your partition table.

Thank u Sterqium for the recommendation and the quick reply

Something other strange happened though.

When I removed the Kingston USB memory Stick, the Partition came back to life again !!!

With all the files and drive letter. At least I got my files back but I still don't know why this happens every time I insert the USB Stick.

HD partition appears as unallocated means maybe mistakenly partition got formated

Opt. 1> Disconnect & reconnect ur Both HD Try by connecting with another cable.

Opt. 2> Format the HD partition which appears as unallocated & then using data recovery software recover ur data back

try using this software for recovering ur data back           http://www.freedatarecoverysoftware.net/download.php

Other option is try using this software http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm to recover partition

Is your Kingston memory stick being given the drive letter of your 2nd hard disk?

I think you have a point here dbrunton....

Is it from the BIOS I find out?

No.

Check what drive letter the 2nd hard drive is with the USB key out.  Could be E: or F: or something else.

See what happens when you insert the USB key.  If it takes the 2nd hard drive letter then that explains what is happening.  If it does try right clicking on the USB key in Disk Management and see if you can reassign another drive letter to it.
