Windows 7 Internet With Network
From the the outset let me say that my knowledge of Windows 7 is limited (My own computers are Vista).
I recently setup a new computer for a friend including his Internet connection and a small home network (Named "Network"); it all worked fine for a couple of months until he lost the Internet connection for apparently unknown reason.
The ONLY way I can connect him back to the Internet is by creating a new network (Named "Richard LAN") BUT I cannot get that new network to "talk" to other computers, not do other computers see the new connection; so now one network (the new one) has Internet connection but no network and the other has network but not Internet
I cannot delete the old network (the "Delete" is greyed out), I can delete the new one but when I do, he looses the Internet connection.
Beats me.
Any idea?
Jacob

how many network cards is he using? one is 'broadband' ? is that a vpn? how did you set up the richard lan ?
It sounds like you are using Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). You need one with internet connection and one to share.
Select the 'Local Area Connection' link in the Network and Sharing Center for the 'Network' connection. Deselect the tick for IPv6. You don't need that anyway. Get the properties of the IPv4. Is it set to automatic (DHCP) for both local IP and DNS? In the sharing tab, is sharing turned on?
I am assuming that this computer you are working with is the 'Host' for Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). Here is a pretty good description and configuration guide of ICS from Microsoft. Your 'host' machine has two connections for network, right? One has internet and the other one is for sharing.
Hope this helps

Thank you all for your prompt responses; Separator reply toeach of you in separe posts below:
ve3ofa,
He has two networks cards; 1) LAN (cabled) connected to a ADSL2 modem-router connect to a telephone line and 2) WiFi which is DISABLED (as it is ONLY a backup Internet connection through my, semi-public, access point should he get service interruption from his own ISP). I am not concerned wit his WiFi at this point but I mention that he lost that connection too.
As I mention, I am quite a rookie and I am not cenrain as to what VPN as - I create both connection through "Set up a new Connection ..." links - The "connect to a network" opens only the new connection but does not actually connect.

time to go into system restore to the point before you did that work possibly to the point were he did have internet connectivity.

Wolfhere,
Indeed I use ICS (I think), but the actul connection is through a modem-router; his two other computers get their connections directly from the router, not through any other computer.
I do not have access to his computer right now but I will try your suggestion this evening (Sydney time).
I am not sure that I use the "host" as such - the internet connection is through a modem-router and all the other computers on the network get the connection directly from the router.
I shall check out the Microsoft link you provided shortly.
Reverting (possibly tomorrow)

Diire,
Indeed, I set up the new connection using Windows.
I shall try you solution this evening (I don't have access to this computer right now).
By way of a comment; by a sheer coincidence, last week I replaced my own modem-router and that EXACTLY what I did; I re-establish the Internet connection through the new modem-router and the other computers followed suit found it automatically
I shall revert with the outcome, possibly tomorrow

We3ofa,
Re system restore.
Unfortunately, Richard (the computer owner) has been with this problem for about two/three weeks and he had tried to resolved it by himself by various means (without creating restore points); I am reluctant to do that as I would probably need to go back at least three weeks which may result in some unintended consequences.

ok turn off internet connection sharing .. control panel, network and internet, network connections, properties of whatever adapter you are using. , reboot, you might want to check your ipv4 properties and make sure that it is set to obtain ip address automatically, and dns server automatically. You should have internet and lan networking now.

Thank you all again for your help.
Firstly my apology for the late reply; I did not have the oppotunity to get into Richard's computer until last night (here).
In fact Diire was right on the money; I removed the new connection ("Richard LAN" - with Internet connection but no network) and reestablished the Internet connection by logging into the modem and ... bingo.
Thank you
Best regards
Jacob
