UnknownProto discards Adtran Netvanta 1234

I have 5 Adtran Netvanta 1234 POE swtiches. I have 2 vlans setup. I have noticed network latency increasing in the past week. I am try to track down the cause. I setup a SNMP server to graph the interfaces of the switches to see if any of them have excessive use. (Cacti Server) On the Default vlan, which is used for data only, shows Discards/IN on all the switches. I tracked it down to UnkownProto. How do I find out what devices are creating the traffice that is causing these discards?

Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Configure Netflow on your router so that you can see the ip flows of each ip on the LAN.  You can then run reports that will show you which ip addresses are high usage, and look at the ports being used.  A good tool to use is Adventnet's OpManager along with their Netflow plugin.  http://www.manageengine.com/

Will it give me info on the Unkown Protocols? I understand it will help with the latency issue.

You will need to try it, because what is unknown to your current software, may be known to OpManager & Netflow.

I contacted Adtran and worked with their support department. Apparently, SNMP OID is reporting incorrectly. There appears to be an issue but it is not an UnknownProto issue. Engineering is going to release a patch to fix. I will have to wait and see.
