Add a DNS Record to SBS 2003

This should be a piece of cake but I have never done it before. I have a customer who has a SBS 2003 Server. It is their DNS server. When I open IE on the server and go to https://mail.domain.com/exchange it times out. I have never taken the time to figure it out but it has something to do with recussion or something becuase it goes out to the internet and then comes right back to the server.

Anyway... when I use https://server/exchange it works fine. I think what I need to do is put a DNS entry in their DNS server that points mail.domain.com to 192.168.0.1 rather then the internet IP address. That way when they are attched to the LAN mail.domain.com will be directed to the local server. Can someone tell me how to add this DNS entry?

From the server, when I ping mail.domain.com, it comes back with the public IP. I want it to come back with the local IP don't I?
