Sharing excel Document

We have an excel document that needs to be accessible and updatable by a handful of employees at any one time. What is the best way to do this? Is Sharepoint what we need?

Well,

I think you can do that in google docs but I would advise against real-time sharing of excel files. Excel is prone to crashing and you would end up losing your data. Shared workbooks are never a good idea. The concept has not be well-developed by microsoft.

If you have a site on sharepoint, you can upload the file there. that would be the best way to go.

If not, you can try google docs too for online sharing or workspaces@ live.com. Please see the links below -

Thanks,

Hey,
SharePoint is an option. But if you only want to share 1 document you can do it with online solutions like:

or google docs.....

With either of these solutions can the document be open and editable by more than one person at a time? The problem we have now is that when the doc is opened by one person and another needs to open and edit, it's only available in Read Only mode. We need to have multiple people be able to open and edit this document at the same time.

Then Google Docs is an option for you :)
Edit and present with others in real time.
Multiple people can view and make changes at the same time. There's an on-screen chat window for spreadsheets, and document revisions show you exactly who changed what, and when. Viewing a presentation together is a breeze, as anyone joined in a presentation can automatically follow along with the presenter.

If the Excel sheet is on a file share, you can also use the built in Excel shared workbook feature. Tools - share workbook in 2003, later versions have this somewhere in the ribbon, don't have a running instance to check though. This allows multiple people to open nd edit xls file.

Agree with pari123... we had issues with it in the past.
