Does anyone have experience with Oracle Disk Manager (ODM) and know how it compares to ASM in terms of which is better at reducing disk contention?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

My 2 cents, it is apples and oranges. ODM is not a volume manager / filesystem itself, but is an interface to one, usually Veritas. If an underlying filesystem or LVM is ODM compliant, Oracle can get enhanced performance due to reduced overhead, however, that doesn't address contention at all. Contention would be address with striping and/or relocation of hotspots to different volumes. ASM and other LVMs allow the DBA to do this. ASM is Oracle's builtin LVM, and it saves you some bucks to use it.

So you would more likely compare ODM to something if you know the underlying LVM being used with ODM, otherwise it is just an API layer that Oracle uses and offers nothing by itself.

Having never specifically configured ODM (always used quickio on Veritas) I cannot give any anecdotes, but nowadays I would opt for ASM on top of a storage subsystem (EMC or NetApp), to eliminate the need to license the 3rd party filesystem / LVM.

Hope that helps.
