Space is not recovered from deleted exchange server 2007 mailboxes

Exchange server 2007, I just disconnected three large old mailboxes. Mailbox database properties > limits tab > "Keep deleted mailbox items for (days) is set for 1 day.

I looked at the size of the drive to mailbox databases on, and nothing has changed.  Deleting these mailboxes should have recovered a noticeable amount of size, but has not.  Does anyone know what could be happening here?

Space is actually an issue in this case. In order to create a new mailbox database and start moving mailboxes to it, I assume you will need to have a good chunk of free space available.

Maybe I can create the new store to an externally attached drive temporarily, then when the old mailbox store is deleted, I can move the new mailbox store back to the internal hard disk?
You cannot store an exchange database on an external drive.  If you don't have space for anew database you won't have space for an offlone defrag.

I'd suggest temporarily installing an IDE/SATA drive and creating a new database on that, then move it once done.
The only thing on the drive is exchange data store, and since the database will not take up any more space for a while, the situation should be under control until we acquire new server.
