Attachments have grown in number and size

Greetings experts,

My Domino server at is R8.0.2 on a WIndows 2003 Enterprise server. I have a database that started out to be relatively OK in size but is now over 5 GBs in size after compacting. This is probably due to the fact that there are review documents in it and most of the review documents contain attachments.

So my question is what would be the best practice as far as attachments are concerned? Do we place them in a separate database? Or is there a way where one can zip them and keep them in the same database? Is there a nice (read nothing that needs to be paid for) solution for this where the attachment is zipped, the original attachment removed and the zipped one reattached. Should this be done after the document has been saved once the file is attached or after the fact with an agent?

Thank you.

Warm regards - Notes Rookie.

Enable DAOS if that's possible: it moves attachments out of the database and puts them elsewhere. It is one of the "nice" features... ;-))

Hi sjef - What gotchas have you run across in upgrading to 8.5? Any design issue I need to keep an eye on? Any documents I can read up on? Thanks.

Regards - Notes Rookie.
I can absolutely recommend to upgrade to R8.5.2, or wait a little till R8.5.3 becomes available. Even if the upgrades I have seen didn't show no issues at all, I'd still recommend some testing before you upgrade the server hosting your company's vital applications. Or at least make a full backup.

Thanks, doninja - I will do that for now and upgrade to 8.5.3 after it comes out.
