MacBook Pro and the Rainbow wheel

Hi, I have had my Macbook Pro for almost a year now and from time to time I have faced the problem of the laptop going sluggish and the rainbow wheel turning for every click, sometimes for way too long. I have many times re-installed the OS, but that only works for a short while. I constantly repair permissions, have used Onyx, Drive Genius, and a few other programs to better its performance for longer duration but alas...

Right now i did repair permissions... and exactly post three minutes i repeated it without using the computer. I happened to have almost the same permissions repaired.

Please help me to know what is it that's going wrong and what exactly do I need to do to rectify the performance of my computer.

I am enclosing the repair permission log.

Thank you. Repair-Permissions-log.doc

How much free space do you have on your drive?

Have you tried using Activity Monitor (found in /Applications/Utilities) to see if one particular app is using all your CPU cycles? (Set Activity monitor to sort by CPU?)

Have you checked the logs using Console.app to see if anything suspicious is going on?
Also, have you run Verify Disk using Disk Utility and also checked the S.M.A.R.T statuc?

To be honest, I am not such an expert to know what is suspicious. But, I'll check nonetheless.

• Test HD with Drive Genius again. Most likely Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced.
@ strung: Activity monitor shows kernel tas_task hogging max CPU at 16.2%. The rest of the activity hog not more than 2%. The space available is more than 350gb on my hard disk. As for logs of the console, I would not know if anything is going wrong. If you would like me to put it up for you I could. Also the SMART Status shows verified. Was wondering if you managed to see the repair permission log and feel if its normal?

@EG777: I have checked it the HD with Drive Genius. Whenever Drive Pulse has suggested to repair disk I have done so. Currently it is not showing anything.
16.2% is not enough to cause a problem. I doubt if permissions are the problem. What happens when you run Verify Disk?

@strung: it shows that everything is ok. But for permissions it shows some permissions are out of place even after repair permission has been just conducted.
Leave Console open and see what is being recorded while the wheel is spinning.
@strung: (Leave Console open and see what is being recorded while the wheel is spinning.)

You mean when the repair permission is happening? And where on the console is it that I can see the 'recording'?
Not when repair permissions is happening. Just leave it open when you are working and see what the log file is throwing up in the console window when the spinning wheel starts.
Okay I got two fundamental readings one when firefox was on one when it was not.

When it was not: 'attempt to pop an unknown autoreleasepool (0x80600, 821800...). These numbers keep changing.

When firefox was on: MRJ Plugin JEP: JavaScript-to-Java LiveConnect failed -- script principal has malformed origin.

Now the fact is Firefox or otherwise... it has been a bit jerky. Also where can I find the same log as a text. If you could tell me the location... I could paste a significant reading.
You can copy from the Console window and paste into a message here.
@strung: It gives pretty much the same reading that I mentioned above:

03/04/11 7:13:49 PM      [0x0-0xed0ed].org.mozilla.firefox[1957]      MRJ Plugin JEP: JavaScript-to-Java LiveConnect failed -- script principal has malformed origin!

'attempt to pop an unknown autoreleasepool (0x80600, 821800...)

is this a problem? If so how can I resolve it?
I really wanted a little bit more of the log. Say about 20 lines or so.

By the way, are you by any chance running a program called WDDriveManager? It has been known to cause that message.
Usually the "attempt to popup..." message is preceding by the name of the application that is causing the problem.

As no other comment was going anywhere in solving the problem, I simply used the Mac OS Install DVD, to repair Hard Drive. And it worked!
