cable tv box

Hi I have regular cable that comes from the wall through Coax and I have a Plasma tv that has no ATSC port on it. So I have to use a cable top box or dish to get tv channels on there. My question is there a cable top box that will stream the regular cable and give me HD local? I am thinking that a Tivo would do it but I would want a cable box that doesnt charge a monthly fee. Thanks

There is not any cable box that doesnt charge a monthly fee to my knowledge.
You can get free video streaming such as Apple TV:

That's what a cable box is for. Since you already pay a monthly fee to the cable company they should give you a box.

You have a cable box with coax only?
Ask your cable supplier for an updated box with component ports.
They will exchange it for no charge, as it is part of the service included in a cable contract.

Hope this infomation helps.

A RF Modulator will not work:

So speak to your cable contract supplier.

No I have only standard cable that has only 80 or so channels..its the basic. It doesnt come with a cable box from the company. Right now in some rooms I have the cable plugged from the wall directly into the TV but one of my TV's does not have a coax port so I need a external cable box.

In that case it would be best to ask your cable provider what equipment is compatable.
They probably offer it for free.

Something like this will work. It has component out and has a built-in ATSC/NTSC/QAM digital/analog tuner that allows for tuning of analog or digital channels from over the air, or cable, including “cable-in-the-clear” digital channels.

The Toshiba above has a DVD recorder, which you might not need. If you don't want to try the Toshiba, then what you want to find is an external tuner box with ATSC/NTSC/QAM tuner with component output similar to this: http://www.epvision.com/HDTVSTB/phd8vxmain.htm

My apologies, the one below (which is the same as my post above) does not have component out, just component Input.

I guess im not wording the question right. I am looking for a DVR with no subscription payments. I see the Magnavox MDR-513H does this but not sure what the guide looks like. I have a Toshiba SD-H400 which is a good unit but it doesnt get the local HD channels but it has the free Tivo guide which is all I need. I am looking for something like that. Thanks

I don't know how well it will work, but here's one. It is relatively expensive if you consider the monthly fee for a DVR from the cable company is about 12-15 dollars. 600 dollars is the equivalent of 40 months of DVR rental.

You might find something here, but pay close attention to make sure the unit has ATSC/NTSC/QAM tuner and component outputs to match the TV input.
