host records delete right away in dns

I have a domain controller running windows 2008, which is also my dns server. not sure what changed but all of a sudden i have no records in my forward zone or any other zone.  when i manually create a new record and hit refresh it disappears. I have several programs that are pointing to this server by name so in order to get it to work i had to change the name on the application to point to ip address instead. thats how i realized that it was a dns issue and when i went to check dns zones, they were empty.

what can be causing this?

please help.

Do you have any other DNS servers besides this one?

If so, were those zones created manually AFTER it was added to the existing infrastructure?

This is the only dns server and it was added when server was added to infrastructure. All the zones are there and host records were there too before and out if no where they are gone.
Do you have scavenging setup wrong perhaps?

Under System32\dns there should be a dns.log file.  Can you copy it and post it here?

Sure, I will when I get back to work today.

the dns logs in the forward zones are empty and so is the dns.log file. 0kb
Perhaps logging isn't checked in the properties of DNS?  Setup logging and create a few records, then when they delete see if there is anything in the log to post.

do you want me to enable debug logging? because i just did, then created a few host records hit refresh and it was gone. then i checked the debug log and event viewer and nothing showed up.
That's very strange indeed.

On the right-context menu of the expanded zone, select Properties.
On the WINS tab - is it set to use WINS for Forward Lookups?
If so, this is your culprit - uncheck it.

no, there is nothing in the wins tab. It's not checked off. I have no idea how this just changed, i had all these records before and one day i checked and they were gone.
Is your domain zone also a publicly registered FQDN?

i'm not sure if its publicly registered, how do i check this?

nothing comes up seems like its not registered, but again this was working a few days ago.

What makes it hard is that I will be doing this remote.  Do you think i can do this remote without losing internet connection?
Does this server have an iLO or remote access card?  It might be a better option to use that.

I can't say for certain, but it should not drop you if you're using the IP address.

Of course, unless you have an iLO then the absolute safest way would to be at the console.

Make sure you're using the /console or /admin switch for RDP.

I have zones in DNS but what i dont have are any host records inside of my forward zones.

ok ill try it with a rdp session and the /F -console option.

Ill try this tonight and keep you posted.

I'll go ahead and removed DNS and re-install it then configure the zones that i have there now.

thanks, hope this solution works, didnt want to go that route but what other option do we have. lol

I removed DNS by right clicking on the server name and removing. Then when i went back in and created DNS server by using the existing server i have the same problem. All forward zones were re-created.

any other way i should be removing DNS?
Can you send me an email?  My alias here at gmail.
