Add a footnote or label to an VB gridview similar to the caption

I am relatively new to ASP.Net VB and have a Gridview with 4 columns in an ASP.Net VB page.
I have the caption in place at the top of the Gridview but also want to place a line of text (Not a BoundField but just text) that spans all 4 columns similar to the caption at the bottom of the Gridview (footnote) that will only be visible if the gridview returns rows.

Is there a feature of the gridview for this that I have overlooked?

Do I have to place a label outside of the gridview and show/hide it?

If so, how would I do this?

Many Thanks
