Vista laptop running very slow

Someone's asked me to look at a Vista Acer laptop running Hole Premium that was very slow.

Firstly, the person who set it up left Acer's default settings of 31GB to the system partition and 31GB to the data one. So latter ended up 100% free and the former 0%.

I used the Vista program to move the space and merge them into one. It's antivirus ran out a year ago so I have loaded McAfee Viruscan and ran Combofix which deleted a couple of files, but the CPU is still very busy and running high sometimes with no apps running

try CCleaner http://download.cnet.com/ccleaner/ to clean registry and start de-fragmentation. Check it after that.
Hi,

Run msconfig.exe and stop autostarted programs and services.

ASKER

Thanks - I should have added the system is unstable and "posted" this before I finished and to the wrong section.
Try out avast antivirus http://www.avast.com/ it is capable of boot time scan. I presume that your system is infected with Trojans as well so will be good to scan it with malwarebytes as well http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Lastly here are some tips for optimizing Vista http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/windows-vista/Optimize-Windows-Vista-for-better-performance
CCleaner didn't have any success and msconfig.exe won't run
Thanks that was my next step after msconfig, but can't do anything now - won't load apps/Internet - so having to re-install Windows.

I ended up installing XP, rather than the recovery option  - relief to get away from Vista and a PC that won't get choked up.
Although I did not do this, probably the best suggestion
