internet explorer crashes on searching

IE7 and upgraded to IE8 and uninstalled/reinstalled. Any search engine I use like yahoo or google, when you do a search the automatic generation of search results start to come up as you type but IE will  shutdown that there was an error in the msvcrt.dll file. This is on XP Home Edition.

the restore doesn't work since current version is 300k original version is 156k. I restored it and windows just reboots itself. trying to get back into safemode to fix this and put old version back.
Try running Internet explorer without add-ons. You can easily do this by accessing all programs from the start menu and the going to system tools and clicking on IE there. If it doesn't crash then you'll need to find the bad add-on. You can open the normal version of IE and manage add-ons from the tools menu.

too late I can't get into the machine to put back the original dll. I get blue screen that msvcrt.dll has bad checksum and could be corrupt so the restore process didn't update something in registry. I have to yank out drive and plug it into something else to put the old file back.
Is that my fault???

yes it gives me the option to enable them. and just in case I messed this up, I'm on IE7. I have not done the upgrade back to IE8 since the problem existed in that version as well.

now i have the no-addons in system tools and it crashes.
The only other thing I can think of is to go to the control panel and open internet options. Select the advanced tab and and click reset. Other than that I'd just live with Firefox or Google Chrome as a browser or plan on reinstalling WIndows on that computer unless somebody else comes up with a fix.
