I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

There are a lot of options... You can go with Windows based purchase a server 08 and run Exchange on the server.

You can run Linux and run Postfix or one of the other Linux email servers

Then you need to setup DNS and MX records for the mail server.

For any mail server you really need a solid server to drive the mail server as well.. being a home server I would expect a quad core with 4 GB of ram should handle linux and postfix fine... Exchange would require more ram in my experience.
