Guys, The reason was pretty simple. it was occurring due to unavalability of disk space :)

Did you log out and back in after applying the change?

I am running my application on a linux server located in the lab, using ssh terminal from a windows machine.

The application is run foreground and so not possible to logout of and login to the terminal in which the application process is running.
