Forefront Protection is sufficient for virus protection?

Hi Experts,

We are moving to Exchange 2010 soon. Just wondering if the Forefront Protection for Exchange Server is sufficient for the virus protection of the Exchange box itself?? or we still need to install a third party of AV product on the Exchange server?
Please help. Thanks.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I run FPE 2010 on my Exchange servers plus Sophos on ALL servers.
it not recommending to run normal system antivirus on the exchange server, because i might corrupt the database files and logs files, the only thing you need to run message antivirus like Forefront Protection

Interesting view - can you provide the reference document please where this recommendation is made? The normal approach is to exclude the Exchange directories only, not the entire server. FPE only monitors the transports and the mail stores so the rest of the server would be at risk.

PS I have edited the original question to add it to the Microsoft Forefront zone as well.

1. Did you mean you run both Sophos and FPE 2010 on the Exchange box?
2. Does FPE 2010 come with Exchange 2010 Standard? No extra cost?
3. With maximum 50 users and total 30GB storage in my company, I intend to install all Exchange services and FPE 2010 onto the same and only one box. Is it workable? Can you give some suggestions for a small company like us in terms of installation of Ex 2010?
Keith AlabasterEnterprise ArchitectCommented:
1. Yes - just need to exclude the Exchnage directories.
2. Not sure - Exhange 2007 came with the older Foredront Security for Exchange (FSE). I still run Exchange 2007 but bought FPE to replace FSE.
3. I have run Exchange 2010 on a single server quite happily. That said, I am a Microsoft MVP for the Forefront product sets, not Exchange.

So will FPE suffice as the single and sole antivirus for SBS 2008? Will it do mailbox/transport scanning PLUS file system?
Keith AlabasterEnterprise ArchitectCommented:
No There is a reason why it is called forefront protection for exchange
