Server Upgrade from Windows 2000 to 2003

I have to upgrade a SBS 2000 server to SBS 2003. What is the best way of doing this, given that I have to use the same hardware.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

The best way is hiring a pro to get it right.  SBS is easily managed by non-IT people, but too often implemented poorly and incorrectly by people whose first job is NOT IT or IS IT but is ENTERPRISE IT and they don't understand SBS.  For more information, see:

If you insist on doing it yourself, there is documentation and one of the better methods (NOT FREE) is to purchase the very affordable Swing Migration kit from www.swingmigration.com which should provide you documentation and tools to migrate from one install to another using a temporary server (which could be virtual).

1. First take a complete backup of the system. I would strongly recommend Norton Ghost 11. This would ensure that you can restore the rig incase of any failure.
2. Make a list of all the installed apps on the server and see their compatibility with SBS 2003.
3. Ensure that you have the latest BIOS update for your hardware as well as drivers of all the hardware for SBS2003.
4. Refer to this doc from Microsoft: http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/d/c/6dccf9b4-d915-4c95-b5af-100b89e02add/SBS_MigratingSBS2k.doc

6. Check for the appropriate licenses for SBS 2003: http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsServer2003/sbs/techinfo/overview/licensingfaq.mspx
